Professional cardiology nurse quits job to become a big-time farmer with more than 70 employees (video)

A Zambian cardiology nurse did not know that agriculture was actually what would make her the accomplished woman she had been dreaming to become until her father fell seriously ill and she had to quit her nursing profession to take care of him.

Maria Zaloumis was a cardiology nurse in Australia, but it is surprising how she has become one of Zambia's leading tomato farmers today.

According to reports, after Maria left Australia where she was practising for Zambia to take care of her sick father, things became tough because she could not find a job in her home country.

Pressure arising from her father’s medical bills coupled with the need to make ends meet began to weigh her down.

She then thought it necessary to do away with ego and venture into agriculture, and today, she sees it as a way of life rather than just a profession.

The beautiful lady who has been nicknamed 'The Zed Farmer' has a large farm that produces a jaw-dropping 72 tonnes of tomatoes per month and has employed more than 70 people.

Now, it appears she has lost interest in the nursing job as she is aiming to expand her farm to employ and assist more people within her community.

Maria Zaloumis speaks about how she perceives agriculture and the prospects in a short video produced by Aljazeera.
