Brailsford: No fear in British Cycling

Former performance director Dave Brailsford believes fear is not how elite cyclists are motivated within British Cycling.

Dave Brailsford is confident the independent review into British Cycling will show there is no sexism, bullying or discrimination within the organisation.

Last week the national governing body saw technical director Shane Sutton resign amid claims of discrimination against elite cyclists, which the Australian denies.

Brailsford - who preceded Sutton at British Cycling before stepping down to lead Team Sky - believes there will be no foundation to the claims, and has pledged to aid the investigation.

"The British Cycling model wasn't based around motivation through fear or performance through fear," he told BBC Radio 4's Today programme.

"You can't get performance on a continuous basis over a long period of time through fear. I just don't believe it."

"It's really good that this inquiry has been brought in, so we can establish the truth.

"I'm not going to go into the details. What I will do is I'll share everything that I know with that inquiry."

Sutton was suspended pending an internal review following track rider Jess Varnish's claims he told her to "go and have a baby" after being dropped from the Great Britain team having failed to qualify for the Olympic Games in Rio.

The 58-year-old has also been implicated in further allegations of derogatory remarks made about Paralympic athletes.
