Alpine Skiing World Cup races fall victim to weather

The FIS Alpine World Cup races scheduled to take place in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Maribor on Sunday were cancelled due to the weather.

Humid conditions in Bavaria prevented the men's giant slalom from taking place a day after the downhill went ahead.

Chief race director Markus Waldner said: "It was impossible to have a safe race. A big hand to the organisers who did a great job, but today again - like in Adelboden - mother nature was stronger."

Only 24 of the competitors were able to complete their first run in the women's slalom in Maribor before mild temperatures brought a halt to the event after Sarka Strachova and Wendy Holdener had set the pace.

"The main problem was at the end of the steep section, but the course also developed in a negative direction on top section, so we saw that it was not possible to hold the course in a good shape," FIS chief race director Atle Skaardal said.

Alternative dates for the events have not been confirmed.
