Drivers in Accra may have to look at acquiring a Tesla Model S as it is capable of ‘swimming’ through water
The Tesla Model S can act as a boat during floods
Major parts of the city, such as Kwame Nkrumah Circle; Dzorwulu; Awoshie and Airport Residential, are flashpoints when it rains in the city. Sometimes flood waters are so strong, they carry cars away to distance places.
There appears to be a solution in sight for these drivers. It lies in Tesla Model S; an electric car made by Tesla Motors, a pioneering car maker.
A recent video, believed to be taken in Kazakhstan shows the Model S swimming past other cars at a flooded tunnel with ease.
In a tweet; Tesla’s chief executive officer Elon Musk boasted about the car’s ability to “turn into a boat” although he did not recommend driving through water.
The Tesla Model S was first launched in 2012 and according to its makers, is the world’s first premium electric sedan with room for up to seven passengers. It has a five star rating from the United States National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
The average Accra driver should be prepared to cough up between 57,000 dollars (228,000 cedis) and 81,200 cedis (324,000 cedis) for any of the ‘models’ of the Model S. There is also the small problem of insurance as most insurance companies will not pay claims for any damage done to a car that was driven intentionally through flood waters.
Earlier this year, the company announced plans for the Model 3; a cheap electric car starting at 35,000 dollars. The car has so far received over 400,000 pre-orders according to Tesla.
Maybe Tesla should start a little side project with affordable cars for the Ghanaian market, especially in Accra, as it seems nothing will be done to prevent the annual floods which affect the city.
