Policeman suspended after video of him shooting a crocodile surfaces

A police officer in Mexico has been suspended after a video showing him shoot a crocodile with a machine gun surfaced.

According to BBC, the video of the shooting which took place at a water treatment plant in the north-western state of Sinaloa was posted on Youtube.

The footage shows the man shooting at the crocodile several times after it was pulled to the side of the pond in a fishing net.

Crocodiles are a protected species in Mexico, as such the man is facing criminal charges and up to 9 years in jail.

However reports from the local media say the crocodile posed a threat to the local population with Mayor Arturo Duarte Garcia, of the city of Ahome saying the decision to kill the crocodile "should be analysed in the view of the danger".

He however said that "the excess of violence in this case is regrettable".

An investigation on the incident has been launched.
