Here is a look at some of the most shocking and unexpected suicide headlines that occurred this year.

Ghana in the year 2017 has witnessed some of the shockingly unexpected suicide cases ever.

More than 8 people aged between 16-32 years are believed to have killed themselves. These suicides bring to the fore the kind of pressure and frustration that usually accompanies people.

Here is a look at some of the most shocking and unexpected suicide headlines that occurred this year.

KNUST Suicide case

An 18-year-old daughter of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament (MP) for Asante Akyem Central Constituency, Kwame Anyimadu-Antwi, on February 24, 2017, allegedly committed suicide at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).

The deceased, Adwoa Agyarkwa Anyimadu-Antwi, a first-year student, is believed to have hanged herself in the early hours of the morning. She was found lifeless with a rope around her neck hung to her room’s ceiling. No one has been able to tell the reason for her act but her friends at the time indicated that she was complaining about her academic performance which she felt was going to cause disappointment for between her and her parents.

The late chemical engineering student reportedly left a note that read, “am sorry to disappoint you mummy and daddy”.

Girl, 16, allegedly kills herself at New Tafo

Soon after the KNUST suicide case in February, a 16-year-old reportedly killed herself at New Tafo in the Eastern Region the following month. Her lifeless body was found by her mother in their kitchen on Tuesday [March 8, 2017] afternoon.

UG Student’s Death


Students and authorities of the University of Ghana were in March this year gripped with fear and horror when they woke up and found a final year female student lying in a pool of blood after allegedly jumping to her death.

Jennifer Nyarko, a Consumer Science student, was said to have jumped from the fourth floor of her Akuafo Hall Annex A room 407. She was found with severe head injuries by porters at dawn. Many said she had before the incident been moody and not too well.

SHS graduate commits suicide; leaves behind note for lover


A 21-year-old senior high school graduate on July 7, 2017 allegedly committed suicide at Tweemu, a fishing community near Moree in the Central Region.

The victim, Felix Dorde, alias Selorm was found with a suicide rope around his neck in his room.

Police said the incident occurred at about 11:00 pm. But what got many Ghanaians talking was the fact that he left behind a note for his girlfriend, saying that he truly loves her. What could have really accounted for this?

Policewoman commits suicide


Then there was the policewoman who allegedly committed suicide under such mysterious circumstances.

The 31-year-old, Constable Peace Agbemafo, was said to have shot herself with an AK 47 assault rifle, in her room in the Garu-Tempane District of the Upper East region.

Reports suggest that she was found motionless but was still holding the AK 47 she possibly used when police officers forced the door to her room opened. Two empty shells, a knife and a rope tied to the ceiling were found during a police inspection of the room.

The deceased was expected on duty at the GN Bank branch at Garu on the day the incident occurred but she did not show up.

Another police officer commits suicide


A police officer with the Central Police Station, Kumasi also shot himself in July this year.

It was not clear what led to the alleged suicide, but residents said that the police officer, Kofi Owusu had received a call in the early hours of the day of the incident right after he had asked his girlfriend to leave his room. His girlfriend agreed and left the room, the resident said.

But immediately after she had left, a gunshot was heard from the police officer’s room.

Residents subsequently rushed to his room and found him in a chair with a gunshot wound to his neck.

30-year-old commits suicide at Ashaiman

In March, a man believed to be in his early 30s was found bare-chested hanging dead on a neem tree at the Ashaiman irrigation development site.

He was found on a Monday morning when some of them woke up to attend to nature’s call in a nearby bush.

Residents indicated that the man is unknown in the area and, therefore, could not tell where he came from, or what might have prompted him to take his life.

Chief commits suicide

Just when we thought that reports of suicide cases were over, a chief of Pokrom-Nsaba near Nsawam in the Eastern Region was in December found dead in a pool of blood with a gun beside him in a case many have suspected to be suicide.

Elders said that they heard a gunshot and came around, only to find the chief, Nana Ayesu Agyei who is believed to be in his 60s dead in his bathroom around 3:30 am.

The 60-year-old did not leave any suicide note, however, persons close to him have linked his death to a land case.
