Sunyani tops in HIV prevalence in Brong Ahafo

Sunyani in the Brong Ahafo Region has the highest prevalence with 4.2 per cent.

According to the Regional HIV Coordinator, Emmanuel Obeng Hinneh, the case is attributed to people not acting on HIV/AIDS prevention education by health directorates.

HIV prevalence was higher in urban areas compared to the rural areas in the region.

Speaking in an interview with the GBC in Sunyani, he said "This year the HIV/AIDS Sentinel Report had the Bono-Ahafo Region coming in as the Region with second highest AIDS prevalence rate in the country. We consequently sought to find out steps being taken to improve the situation."

Emmanuel Obeng Hinneh revealed that Sunyani has the highest HIV/AIDS prevalence when the region was zoned into four, namely Kintampo, Sunyani, Wenchi and Asunafo.

He added that it shows an increase in prevalence rate among pregnant women from 3.8 to 4.2 percent.

The prevalence rate for the other towns in the region are: Sunyani 4.2, Wenchi 2.8, Asunafo, 3.0 and Kintampo, with the lowest HIV prevalent rate of 0.3 percent.
