Ghanaians banned for using performance enhancing drugs

Three Ghanaians athletes have thus far been banned for their involvement in doping over the years.

The latest infamous one happened at the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics which several Russian athletes took performance enhancing drug, according to an investigation conducted.

However, Ghana has experienced just three cases of ban in athletics. Below is the list of athletes who have suffered ban for using performance enhancing drugs.

Mark Anthony Awere

The former long jump bronze medalist in the African Athletic Championship was banned for three months in 2003 after he tested positive for doping in Mulhouse.

Aziz Zakari

The Ghanaian 100 metres sprinter was banned for a two year period for using banned substance in 2006.

Tim Abeyie

The 200 metres runner has suffered the heaviest ban handed to a Ghanaian athlete for using performance enhancing drugs in Germany where he is based. International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) has therefore banned him from all athletics related activities for a four-year period. The news of his ban broke out this week.
