Ghanaian players who could have had a better year at club level

These players were expected to do well at club level for their various sides, yet they struggled to make impact due to one reason or the other.

Sulley Muntari

When the Ghanaian midfielder sealed a move to Pescara, everybody thought it was the moment for him to revive his career, but in the end his six months contract was not renewed and has since the summer remained clubless.

Muntari was enjoying much playing time at Pescara until he walked off the pitch in demonstrating against racial abuse by fans of Cagliari.

He gained support from both individuals and humanitarian bodies, but that was the end of the road for the former Inter Milan and AC Milan midfielder, because he was not selected for the rest of the season.

Muntari, before the end of his six months contract, had said he wasn’t going to extend his deal with the side.

Sulley Muniru

The junior brother of Sulley Muntari joined Steau Bucuresti amid high expectation, but in the end his contract was terminated by the Romanian giants in the wake of allegations of racial abuse against him by the President of the club.

Muniru after his sack from Steau Bucuresti remained clubless for months even after the new European season kicked off. He recently signed a contract with a Portuguese side to end his long wait for a club.

Samuel Inkoom

On February 24 2017, Inkoom joined Bulgarian club Vereya. He made his debut for the team in match against Ludogorets Razgrad for the Bulgarian First League on 26 February 2017. He left the team in June when the Bulgarian FA slapped a one-year ban on him after they received a notice from FIFA that he had breached the terms of agreement between him and his agent.

The former FC Basel defender’s quest to bring life to his career, which appears to be taking a nosedive, is still hanging in the balance.

Andre Ayew

The deputy Black Stars skipper joined West Ham United last season with high expectations after sealing a 20.6-million-pound club record move to the side.

However, he struggled to find form amidst injury worries in his first term at the club, but he was expected to come good in his second season with the Hammers.

Andre Ayew despite starting from the bench in some of the games this season, was at a point the leading top scorer of West Ham United and even came off the bench to rescue his side by scoring a goal that won the EPL goal for the month of October.

West Ham United who have had a torrid time throughout the season parted ways with Slaven Bilic, the very coach who signed Andre Ayew from Swansea City.

David Moyes, who lost his job three years ago at Manchester United, succeeded Bilic at West Ham. Andre Ayew was relegated back to the bench of the team and has been getting limited playing time under Moyes.

Ayew has been linked with a move to his former club Swansea city, with hopes of surviving under David Moyes dwindling.

Godfred Saka

He has been the most trusted right full back on the domestic scene for the past seven seasons. However, last season was a trying one for him, as he led Aduana Stars to their second Premier League title.

As the skipper of Aduana Stars, he was stripped off his captaincy due to indiscipline before he was later reinstated.

Saka started the season well, playing week in week out for the Dormaa-based side, but he suffered a long-term injury that sidelined him for the rest of the season.

After Aduana Stars' remarkable season, Saka decided to seek greener pastures outside the country and despite excelling in a trial match for Nigerian giants Enyimba, the deal fell through and he is now back to the country looking for a new club.
