Ghana defender Jonathan Mensah has strongly refuted claims that the Black Stars only play for the money.

‘Black Stars players not motivated by money; we love Ghana’ – Jonathan Mensah

He said, contrary to such a view, players of the Black Stars actually love to don the national jersey.

The Columbus Crew centre-back explained that they always put Ghana first when they come for national assignments.

“The first thing is to love Ghana because we are Ghanaians. We you called upon to play either you love the nation or you love something else,” Mensah said on Citi TV.

“What makes fans think we don’t love the team? Because If I don’t love the team I don’t need to come waste my time, the nation’s time and the coaches time as well.

“If you don’t love it don’t come around it but if you do then you are all in. I believe whoever gets a call up comes in wholeheartedly with the intention to help the team move forward.”

The Black Stars have previously been accused of lacking commitment and patriotism due to past happenings.

Many Ghanaians still refer to an episode during the 2014 World Cup, where players threatened to boycott a group game against Portugal over delayed bonuses.
