It was reported by several Ghanaian sports portals that Christian Atsu has retired from the Black Stars over neglect by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) after he suffered an injury against Cameroon during the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which even cost him his starting berth at Newcastle United.

According to the reports, Christian Atsu as a result of that told CK Akonnor the new head coach of the Black Stars that he is no longer available for selection.

However, the former Chelsea midfielder according to a teammate he confided in says he just told CK Akonnor that because he has just made an injury return, he should be excused from the doubleheader against Sudan in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

"Christian Atsu is really surprised with the reports," According to Footballghana.com

"He has not communicated to CK Akonnor that he has retired from the national team. They had a fruitful discussion when Akonnor visited him in England.

"Atsu told the coach he should excuse him from the Sudan game because he just returned from injury but he pledged his support to the coach.

"I will urge Ghanaians to disregard any reports. Atsu is still a member of the Black Stars and ready to play anytime he is called upon," he added.
