How the Ghana Football Awards was choked with a pool of lovely slay queens

Awards night like the Ballon d’Or has shown that when the red-carpet lights are on, you can’t tone down the dress up. So technically, football awards nights are not just about football.

The F360 Ghana Football Awards took place on Sunday, July 8, 2018. For a maiden edition, the show managed to impress with respect to respecting time as they wowed with their schedule.

Ghanaian player Thomas Teye Partey won the biggest awards on the night as he was crowned the Ghana Footballer of the Year. The Atletico Madrid player was impressive for his team helping them to the UEFA Europa League title.

Thomas Abbey, previously of Accra Hearts of Oak won the Home-Based Player of the Year award for the timeline under review.

Yusif Abubakar was named the Coach of the Year, Princella Adubea, the Women’s Footballer of the Year and Joseph Mensah winning the Goal of the Year.

Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan won the ‘Thumps Up’ award for his philanthropy works, the main focus being his AstroTurf pitch for his former school Accra Academy.

However, as said earlier, football awards are not just about football and arguably for the first time in Ghana, the interest from people who are not so much into football went off the roof.

Slay Queening can loosely be defined as a woman who wants to choke everyone else with how beautiful and cool they are. With social media on the ‘rise like stew’, seeing these photos has never been easier.

But it’s also an act that needs people to put themselves out there for all the capturing a camera can do.

Where there’s a red carpet, there also will a slay queen be. If you don’t know this rule, are you even a slay queen. Now, enough of the gibberish.

The Ghana Football Awards provided an avenue to shine and Ghana’s very own slay queens embraced it.

Aside from the ‘football people’ that were at the Marriott Hotel in Accra, the glam and shine from Instagram’s most dress and show were on fleek on the red carpet.

Think of your typical slay queen (aside from the ever-winning Nana Akua Addo) and the Ghana Football Awards was a platform to explode in the art of slaying.

Moesha Boduong put the criticism aside to appear in all her slaying glory. She wore a blue body fitting dress for the night complimented by her trademark cornrow hairstyle.

Up and coming Instagram star Rosemond Brown did not go the Ghana Music Awards way this time around. She wore a sleeveless orange jacket with a black inner. Rosemond did not show too much neither did she show very little on the night.

Efia Odo was always going to show up. As a host and part of the Kwesse team, the young lady who has never shied away from the ever-watching eyes of social media impressed with her green fitting dress.

Talking about appearance on the night, you can’t take away the coloured hair from Efia Odo. She complimented her green outfit with a blonde hair and yellow colouring at the end of the hair, a unique style that gave her away in the pool of slay queens.

And of course, there was Princess Shyngle with a black fitting gown. One would not have to waste time to spot the small waist that has broken Ghana’s internet time and time again.

Fella Makafui did not appear at the Ghana Football Awards to serve some wine but she definitely did serve some African print style goals. Rocking her usual short hair with a touch of ‘aboy’, the leaf patterned African print outfit brought the smile in her happiness.

Ladies and gentlemen, former-ish queen of the Shatta Movement and one of the biggest slay queens the music industry has ever seen in Ghana, Shatta Michy was also present.

There was Chris Kata and many others who flourished under the lights at the Marriott Hotel.

For the good of women football, one would hope that these slay queens will at least pick up an interest in the game. The love thereof propelling to improve in ways that can only be a way up for women football.

Or maybe not. Maybe they have to shine at every event so people’s attention will be drawn to a particular topic. Maybe, it’s just about the photos.

Nonetheless, it is commendable that there is an interest in football in the eyes of the women who have all the attention on social media. As they slay and queen at these football events, may they find the light that peaks their interest in football, advocating for the best there is to take Ghana to where she wishes to be.

And damn, Adina Thembi Ndamse can sing!
