Bibiani GoldStars appoint Swiss coach Fritz Markus Schmid as head coach
Bibiani GoldStars have signalled a clear statement of intent ahead of the 2025/26 season with the appointment of Swiss coach Fritz Markus Schmid as their new head coach.
The reigning Ghana Premier League champions confirmed Schmid’s arrival on a two-year contract, entrusting him with the responsibility of guiding the club through a critical phase of its development.
GoldStars’ rise over the past few seasons has been rapid and impressive, culminating in their historic league title in June 2025, the first in the club’s history, and qualification for the CAF Champions League.
Schmid brings with him a wealth of international experience. The Swiss tactician has worked in elite football environments, including spells as an assistant coach at Tottenham Hotspur and roles within the technical structures of FC Basel, one of Switzerland’s most successful clubs.
His background in high-performance football and player development is seen by GoldStars’ hierarchy as a major asset as the club seeks to sustain success and raise standards across the board. The appointment follows a period of transition at Bibiani.
The club parted ways with former head coach Frimpong Manso after an early exit from the CAF Champions League preliminary round, a disappointment that highlighted the challenges of competing at the highest level in Africa.
While the league triumph established GoldStars as a force in Ghanaian football, the continental campaign exposed the need for greater tactical depth and international experience.Club officials believe Schmid’s arrival addresses that need.
His mandate is not only to stabilise performances in the Ghana Premier League but also to lay a foundation for consistent competitiveness in Africa. With GoldStars still a relatively young club at the top level, having gained promotion to the Premier League in 2021, the emphasis is firmly on long-term growth rather than short-term fixes.
In his initial remarks after taking up the role, Schmid described the opportunity as a significant honour and an exciting challenge. He expressed enthusiasm about working in Ghana and adapting his football philosophy to the local game, while building on the strengths of a squad that has already proven it can compete at the highest domestic level.
Supporters will be eager to see how Schmid blends his European experience with the realities of the Ghanaian game, and whether his influence can translate into consistency, improved performances, and deeper runs in the competition.
