Beauden Barrett claimed a 22-point haul as Hurricanes left it late to secure maximum points in a 42-20 Super Rugby victory over struggling Southern Kings at Westpac Stadium on Friday.

Hurricanes made hard work of extending their winning run to three matches against a Kings side still yet to pick up a point since returning to Super Rugby.

Last year's runners-up, playing at home for the first time this season, raced into a commanding 19-3 lead with tries from Ngani Laumape, Blade Thomson and Ardie Savea.

But Kings showed plenty of character to reduce the deficit 19-17 down at half-time after captain Steven Sykes, making his 100th Super Rugby appearance, and Louis Fouche touched down.

Fouche kept Kings in it with his second penalty of the match to take his points haul to 15 just after the hour-mark following two Barrett penalties, but the visitors were unable to prevent Chris Boyd's men from adding a further two tries.

Vince Aso dotted down in the corner after a great offload from Vince Aso seven minutes from time and Barrett surged clear right at the end to score the final try, which he converted to seal a victory which was far less convincing than the scoreline would suggest.
