Ramos-Vinolas survived a break point on his opening service game, but was then broken by the Russian to go 2-1 down.

The world number 57 recovered to edge his opponent by three breaks to two, but he found himself on the back foot for much of the second set.

And a dropped service game at the beginning of the decider suggested Ramos-Vinolas' poor run could continue, before he went from 2-0 down to 5-2 up on his way to clinching victory.

In the day's other first-round match, Andrey Kuznetsov did not drop a single service game on his way to a comfortable 6-3 6-1 win over Dudi Sela.
