The SAG Racing rider lost grip heading into turn 12 after braking later than normal, leading to the high-speed crash.

Alonso revealed he will wear a special tribute to his fellow Spaniard for Sunday's Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal.

He wrote on Instagram: "You will always be in the heart of many people. I respect you. I admire you. Eternal."

Alonso drove to his best result of the season last time out in Monaco, finishing in fifth place ahead of Force India's Nico Hulkenberg.

The 34-year-old McLaren driver has won just once in Canada (2006) since making his F1 debut in 2001.
