The major rookie sits at three under, two shots behind leader Shane Lowry, after 13 holes in his third round in Pennsylvania.

Landry, 28, said his game was better suited to tough courses, with Oakmont providing players with plenty of challenges.

"I feel like I played good golf on hard golf courses where par is a good score. That's just kind of my game. It's always been my game," he said.

"It's kind of like Q [Qualifying] school. It's the same thing with Q school. It's such a hard, long six rounds of golf. You just have to stay really patient and try not to make a lot of mistakes."

Players and organisers have had to play catch-up at the year's second major after poor weather impacted the tournament.

Landry was feeling the effects, saying: "I'm fine. I'm tired. I'm ready to get some sleep. I'm pretty pooped, and I'm ready to get some rest and get back out here."
