Rain leaves Goerges waiting on final opponent

Julia Goerges must wait to discover who she will face in the ASB Classic final after rain halted the last-four match between Caroline Wozniacki and Sloane Stephens on Friday.

After poor weather delayed the start of their semi-final, Stephens looked in impressive form as she went two breaks up against third seed Wozniacki.

However, the heavens opened once again with the score at 5-2 in the opening set, meaning the match will now reach its conclusion on Saturday, just hours before the final.

That turn of events should play into the hands of Goerges, who saw off Tamira Paszek in a 6-4 6-2 triumph.

Paszek was contesting her first semi-final for three and a half years, after knocking out Kirsten Flipkens in the last eight, and matched her opponent in the early stages.

The first set looked to be heading for a tie-break as each player dominated on their own serve, but Goerges produced a break to love on Paszek's delivery in the 10th game.

Paszek had only conceded three points on her own serve prior to that, but the setback seemed to unsettle her as she gave up three breaks in the second set to halt her impressive run.

The final in Auckland will be Goerges' first on the WTA Tour since October 2012, and she has not won a tournament since 2011's Stuttgart Open, when Wozniacki was her opponent.
