Paire, the eighth seed in Marseille, had lost his previous four matches on the ATP World Tour, but got back to winning ways after breaking in a lengthy first game against Simone Bolelli.

The Italian saved seven break points before eventually falling 1-0 down.

Although Bolelli was soon back on level terms, another break in game nine enabled Paire to take the opening set and a similar pattern was repeated in the next as the Frenchman prevailed.

Sixth seed Goffin enjoyed a comfortable 6-3 6-1 victory over Chung Hyeon, which he completed by winning six successive games.

That feat was also achieved by Haase, who triumphed 6-4 6-0 against Joao Sousa – a player 30 places above him in the world rankings.

Haase will face fourth seed Marin Cilic in round two.
