Australia pleased with Olympic village progress

Australia are happy with the progress made at the Olympic village in Rio de Janeiro and will be ready to move in on Wednesday, chef de mission Kitty Chiller said.

Numerous problems were raised by the Australian Olympic Committee on Sunday, including dirty floors, blocked toilets and leaking pipes.

However, Chiller said excellent progress had been made in the village and team members could move in mid-week.

"There was fantastic progress made today," she said on Monday.

"It's looking like, according to our plan, we will be able to move everybody in on Wednesday."

Chiller said numerous nations were experiencing problems of their own ahead of the Olympics opening on August 5.

She defended her decision to complain publicly, insisting her comments were purely about the conditions of the village.

Chiller said: "This is not a slur in any way shape or form.

"The complaints were not against Brazil, they were not against Rio, they were not against the people of Rio or Brazilians, this is a beautiful country with beautiful people."
