In addition to the televisions, Baba Jamal’s team distributed free boiled eggs to delegates, an exercise that reportedly caused some jostling among voters eager to receive the items.

The NDC is conducting the primary to elect a parliamentary candidate ahead of the Ayawaso East by-election, following a successful vetting process that cleared five aspirants to contest the seat.

The contenders are Mohammed Ramme, the NDC Constituency Chairman; Amina Adam, widow of the late Member of Parliament; Baba Jamal Mohammed Ahmed, Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria; Yakubu Azindow; and Najib Mohammed.

Speaking in an interview, Baba Jamal stated that he has been gifting people on several occasion and giving items to delegates is not to influence them to vote.

This is not the first time I have been gifting people, those of you who know me, know that every Christmas, every occasion, every instant, I have put down 2.5 million to give free loans to people. So people are coming today to vote and then, you are giving them something, it is not buying votes.

Responding to concerns about the distribution of items, Baba Jamal defended his actions, insisting that the gifts were not intended to influence delegates’ votes.

If somebody gives you a gift, you can take it. What is wrong is allowing that gift to influence your vote,” he said. “It is not the gift itself; it is the intention behind it.

He added,

It is not about the item. It is about the intention. I have spoken to the delegates, I have met the people, and that is why I am confident.

Baba Jamal maintained that he had acted appropriately throughout the campaign period and reaffirmed his commitment to the contest.
