Baghdatis into last four in Newport, Ferrer wins

Marcos Baghdatis reached the Hall of Fame Tennis Championships semi-finals as David Ferrer was among the winners in Sweden.

Baghdatis, the fourth seed, had few problems getting past Dudi Sela 6-2 7-5 in their quarter-final in Newport on Thursday.

Rain played its part at the ATP 250 tournament held on grass courts, with Gilles Muller and Adrian Mannarino completing their second-round matches.

Muller sent down 11 aces in a 7-6 (9-7) 6-4 win over Victor Estrella Burgos, while Mannarino beat Sam Groth 7-6 (8-6) 6-3.

David Ferrer and 2014 runner-up Joao Sousa booked their spots in the Swedish Open quarter-finals.

Top seed and two-time champion Ferrer was tested before edging French qualifier Calvin Hemery 3-6 7-5 6-3 on the clay courts in Bastad.

Sousa, the second seed, had fewer problems, thrashing local wildcard Carl Soderlund 6-3 6-1.

Dustin Brown fought his way past Aljaz Bedene 6-3 6-7 (5-7) 6-3 and Gastao Elias claimed a 7-6 (7-1) 3-6 6-2 victory over Taro Daniel.
