The all-rounder suffered the injury during the crushing defeat of Pakistan in the second Test at Old Trafford last week and was unable to recover in time for the third Test at Edgbaston, which started on Wednesday.

It has now been confirmed that Stokes, who was replaced by Steven Finn in Birmingham, will play no part at The Oval next week.

The 25-year-old has endured some bad luck with injuries, with his latest setback came on his return to the international stage after knee surgery kept him out of the second Test against Sri Lanka as well as the limited overs series'.

Stokes is aiming to prove his fitness for the five-match ODI series versus Pakistan, which gets under way at the Rose Bowl on August 24.
