Gyan has the right to take penalties - Kwesi Appiah
Black Stars coach, Kwesi Appiah believes Asamoah Gyan did nothing wrong when he made a U-turn on his vow never to take penalties for the national team, insisting the striker "has the right" to do so.
Gyan has been in the news for the past month - first for customizing his armband when the Black Stars played Ethiopia in an AFCON qualifier, and recently for going back on his word on penalty-taking duties.
The striker was previously Ghana's first-choice penalty taker, but vowed never to take penalties for the national side after a series of high-profile misses.
Gyan subsequently ceded penalty-taking duties to Andre Ayew, however, the striker caused a bit of a stir after electing to take a penalty during Ghana's 2-1 loss to USA in an international friendly last Saturday.
The former Sunderland attacker, unfortunately, could not gain some respite after seeing his kick saved by USA goalkeeper Brad Guzan - though he later made amends by scoring Ghana's consolation.
Black Stars coach, Kwesi Appiah believes those criticising Gyan for his actions have gone overboard, explaining that it is within the striker's rights to return to penalty-taking duties for the Black Stars.
"Every player in the world can miss a penalty,” the Black Stars coach said.
“The good thing is that Gyan used to take our penalties and for one reason or another, he decided not to take any more for us.
“Now, he has the right to change his mind and he did so to help our nation.
“I do not believe he went there to miss the kick."
Gyan is currently Ghana's all-time top-scorer with 51 goals in 105 games.
