McCullum hoping heroics inspire New Zealand Test win

McCullum hit a 54-ball century against Australia to break the record for the fastest ton in Test history, eclipsing the previous mark of 56 deliveries set by Viv Richards 30 years ago and equalled by Misbah-ul-Haq in 2014.

In what is his 101st and final Test, McCullum put on a show by smashing 21 fours and six sixes in a thrilling innings.

McCullum came in with New Zealand at 32-3 and his superb performance helped the Black Caps reach a total of 370, and the 34-year-old is hoping his heroics can lay the platform for a series-levelling victory over Australia.

However, when asked if he was aware of how close he was to the record, McCullum said: "No, no idea. I was just trying to hit every ball for four or six. But, jeez, it would be nice to win the Test.

"Viv was my idol growing up so it's nice to go past him on this occasion but he was a cracking player, an incredible cricketer. I'm almost embarrassed."

The veteran also revealed the team had decided they would go all-out attack on a damp, green pitch that favoured the Australian bowlers.

"On that wicket, the feedback from the boys was that at any stage a ball could have your name on it. I just tried to be as positive as I possibly could," McCullum said.

"It's not always going to come off, but we got a little bit of luck and we're sitting here firmly in the Test."

Australia are 57-1 at stumps as they seek to spoil McCullum's farewell party.
