Caroline Wozniacki facing anxious Olympics wait

Caroline Wozniacki faces an anxious wait to discover if she can represent Denmark at the Rio Olympics as an ankle injury that ruled her out of the upcoming Fed Cup tie versus Egypt means she does not meet the eligibility criteria.

World number 24 Wozniacki rolled her ankle during practice on Thursday and the injury ruled her out of the Istanbul Cup and the Fed Cup matches against Egypt between April 13 and 16.

In order to play at the Olympics, the WTA clarifies that a "a player must be part of the final Fed Cup team at the time of the draw and be present at the tie a minimum of three times in the four-year Olympic cycle. One of those ties must occur in either 2015 or 2016."

As Wozniacki has played just once for Denmark in the current Olympic cycle, she needed to play in Egypt in order to meet the rules of qualification.

Exceptions are allowed, including if a player is injured or "otherwise unable to compete in any authorised tennis tournament for a minimum of six months".

Wozniacki is set to be Denmark's flagbearer for the Olympics, and The Danish Tennis Federation (DTF) remains hopeful that the International Tennis Federation (ITF) will allow an exception.

"It is tremendously sad, looking at this from both Caroline's and the Union's [point of view]," said DTF director Sune Irgens Alenkaer.

"The damage is extremely unfortunate and also creates uncertainty about [her] Olympic participation.

"It is my personal hope that Caroline Wozniacki still comes to the Olympics and I am confident the ITF will look at the overall circumstances surrounding the situation that suddenly arose."
