Top seed Gasquet, champion at the hard-court event in 2013 and 2015, trailed 6-1 3-0 in his last-four match with Dustin Brown on Saturday, but nevertheless prevailed.

Twenty-four hours on from that impressive recovery, the 29-year-old overcame Mathieu 7-5 6-4 in an all-French final - despite twice falling a break down in the opening set.

Mathieu led 3-0 and 5-3 early on, but proved unable to take advantage.

Gasquet, the world number 10, now boasts 13 ATP World Tour titles, with this success his first since May.

He has featured in the last four finals in Montpellier, beating Benoit Paire and Jerzy Janowicz either side of a defeat to Gael Monfils in 2014.

In addition, Gasquet triumphed in Lyon 10 years ago prior to the tournament being relocated to Montpellier, while beaten finalist Mathieu was a winner of the eventĀ in 2003.
