Chase fires superb century to salvage draw West Indies

Roston Chase produced a stunning innings to help West Indies avoid an innings defeat in Jamaica and draw the second Test with India on Wednesday.

Starting the day 48-4 with a deficit of 256 just to make India bat again, the hosts finally dominated a day's play after struggling in the previous four and the first Test.

Much was down to the superb 137 not out from Chase as West Indies' lower order turned on the style, much to the delight of Viv Richards in the crowd.

Chase – playing in only his second Test – struck 15 fours and one almighty six to frustrate the India attack, the 24-year-old ably assisted by Jermaine Blackwood (63), Shane Dowrich (74) and captain Jason Holder (64 not out).

India tried in vain to find a way through but the final four wickets they needed would not come in time, Virat Kohli calling it a draw with the hosts 388-6.

Blackwood restarted day four with his new partner Chase and things could have been very different had he not survived a caught behind shout first up.

Given that reprieve, the pair quickly adopted an altogether more aggressive approach in a bid to claim an unlikely draw.

Blackwood dominated the partnership with 60 runs out of the 93 for the fifth wicket, before Chase came to the fore with an extravagant style that pleased those who had dared to believe inside Sabina Park.

A crisp drive took him to 50 from 84 balls and 30 overs later he was celebrating reaching three figures as a misfield allowed him to scamper through for a single.

Still he ploughed on as Dowrich and latterly Holder followed suit, India's bowlers toiling against the renewed vigour of their opposition.

Eventually the deficit was erased and West Indies built a small advantage. Chase completed a fine game as he reached a career-best tally, capping a sensational match for the all-rounder after he took five wickets.

The result gives hope to Holder's side in the four-match series, which heads to St Lucia for the third Test next week.
