The Greater Accra Regional Police Command has secured a court injunction banning the Let My Votes Count Alliance from picketing in the premises of the Electoral Commission.

This comes on the back of plans by thedecision to stage a second demonstration to press home demands for a new Voter's Register for the 2016 elections, after an audit conducted by the New Patriotic Party allegedly revealed names of foreigners from neighbouring countries in the register.

Speaking on Accra-based Citi FM, the Leader of the group, David Asante said they have asked their lawyers to go to court to nullify the injunction.

“I can tell you on authority that all is set for the demonstration. Police did not go to court to stop us from picketing, they went to court to secure an injunction to restrain us from picketing at Parliament House and at the Electoral Commission. However we have instructed our lawyers to also go seek the court to set aside that injunction so that we can go ahead and picket at the Electoral Commission,” he said.

“It is against the fundamental constitutional rights and movements of the citizens for a Police to go seek a court order to prevent you from assessing a public office like the Electoral Commission just to prevent a petition. This is a precedent we are hoping the court will strike out and will not become part of our democratic practice,” he added.

Meanwhile members of the pro-opposition group have indicated that the necessary moves are underway to ensure that justice is served.
