Day extends lead as weather disrupts second round

Jason Day holds a three-stroke lead but the world number one will have to finish his second round on Saturday after weather disrupted play at The Players Championship.

Day had four holes remaining on day two when the round was suspended due to darkness in Ponte Vedra Beach on Friday.

An electrical storm swept through the area but once play resumed, Day - one of 33 players unable to complete their rounds - managed to be five-under through 14 holes at TPC Sawgrass.

After matching the course record on Thursday, Day was flawless again, recording five birdies without dropping a shot to be 14 under overall, three shots clear of Shane Lowry (68), who completed his round.

A stroke further back are Jonas Blixt (67), Alex Cejka and (67) Cameron Tringale (69), while Colt Knost is nine under after equalling the course record via a 63.

World number three Rory McIlroy flirted with the course record before settling for a second-round 64 a share of 12th position at eight under alongside four others.

McIlroy was on a role as he started on the back nine with four consecutive birdies, followed by another at the 15th and a 16th-hole eagle.

The Northern Irishman birdied the second and seventh holes following the turn but he came unstuck at his final hole, where he bogeyed and ultimately fell short in his pursuit of the course record.

American Will Wilcox provided the highlight of the day at the famous 17th hole.

Wilcox aced the par-three 17th, the first player to do so since 2002 as he shot a 71 to be nine strokes behind Day.

Defending champion Rickie Fowler missed the cut at one under after carding a one-under-par 71, along with Masters champion Danny Willett (73).

World number two Jordan Spieth is also projected to miss the cut, with the two-time major winner one under through 14 holes in his first tournament since last month's Masters collapse.
