Denmark France men's handball Rio Olympic Games

France were aiming for a third consecutive gold, but Mikkel Hansen top scored with eight goals as Denmark rose to the occasion in their first final to triumph 28-26 at Future Arena on Sunday.

Denmark had never won a men's handball medal before this week and left wing Casper Mortensen struggled to take in their achievement.

"I can't believe it. It's a dream come true. I don't know what to say. I'm speechless right now. I'm so proud of this team." said Mortensen.

"We haven't beaten France in such a long time, they've not lost a final. This means everything for Denmark."

France centre-back Nikola Karabatic said: "I think that we were tired and that's why we lost, basically. But in spite of it all we have a silver medal and this is historical too - two French teams with silver medals."

Germany saw off Poland 31-25 to claim bronze, joining France as the only country to have won all three Olympic medals in men's handball.
