Former England bowler Darren Gough had suggested Pietersen could look a playing for the country of his birth from 2018 after being shunned by the England and Wales Cricket Board.

Pietersen has not played for England since the 2013-14 Ashes defeat despite continuing to score runs around the world in T20 competitions.

"KP is a player who's had a great career for England," he told a news conference. "But certainly, from a South African perspective….he's English."

Pietersen has made no public comment about any intention of representing South Africa.
