Dustin Johnson closed to within one shot of U.S. Open leader Shane Lowry as the latter made a nervy start to his final round at Oakmont.

A 378-yard drive on the first hole set the tone for an aggressive start from the big-hitting Johnson, who duly birdied the second and was within two when Lowry made bogey at the same hole.

Johnson looked set to make up further ground at the fifth, but he failed to even hit the hole with a short putt. A moment of drama followed as his ball moved on the green, although no penalty was incurred as Johnson had not fully addressed the ball.

Lowry, who did fall victim to a penalty when his ball moved after address in his second round, then made a mess of the fifth himself and a bogey left the Irishman five under and just one clear of Johnson.

Scott Piercy and Sergio Garcia were two under and shared third, the Spaniard holing a bunker shot for a two on the long par-three eighth, which was playing 299 yards.

Jim Furyk, Branden Grace and Daniel Summerhays sat a shot further back, but the likes of Andrew Landry and Lee Westwood were heading in the wrong direction - both dropping five shots in five holes.

Brooks Koepka had threatened to shoot the first 62 in majors when he picked up eight shots in as many holes to be six under through 11 and level par for the tournament. However, he then fell away and had to settle for a 68.
