Four-time major champion Ernie Els endured a nightmare start to the Masters on Thursday, running up an embarrassing 10 on Augusta's first hole.

Els strung together five top-six finishes in a row at the year's first major between 2000 and 2004, twice finishing as runner-up.

However, the man known as 'The Big Easy' could hardly have begun his 22nd appearance at Augusta in worse fashion as he suffered a torrid time with the putter en route to a double-figure score on the first.

Els took seven putts to register the worst score recorded on Augusta's opening hole.
