Toulouse's Dusautoir, 34, spoke to new coach Guy Noves before announcing his decision.

The flanker, whose team reached the Rugby World Cup quarter-finals, said he was convinced retirement was the right call.

"I saw him [Noves] this morning. We arrived at the same conclusions," Dusautoir told L'Equipe.

"That is why I am convinced that my choice is dictated by reason."

He added: "I believe that this is the wisest decision."

Dusautoir made his France debut in June 2006 against Romania, and his last Test was the 62-13 humbling at the hands of the All Blacks in Cardiff.

He scored six tries and France won 41 of the 80 Tests he was involved in, having started 79 of those.

Dusautoir scored his nation's only try in their 8-7 loss to New Zealand in the 2011 World Cup final.
