England, Sri Lanka draw third Test
England's hopes of earning a series whitewash were ended by the rain as the third and final Test against Sri Lanka ended in a frustrating draw on Monday.
The hosts declared on 233-7 during their second innings at Lord's on Sunday, and Sri Lanka were unbeaten on 32-0 in pursuit of 362 by the close.
However, what should have been a thrilling finale was ruined as a mixture of rain and poor light meant just 12.2 overs were possible, with Sri Lanka ending on 78-1.
There was no play at all in the morning session and it was not until around 1.20PM local time that a ball was bowled.
James Anderson did make a breakthrough when he jagged one back at a bamboozled Kaushal Silva, who was given out leg before offering no shot, with a review proving futile.
But the heavens soon opened again to cause another lengthy delay that made a draw seemingly inevitable.
Play once again briefly resumed and Stuart Broad almost took a brilliant caught-and-bowled off Kusal Mendis, before the batsman walloped Joe Root for a straight six.
That proved the last action of the Test series, though, as the players were brought off again and the decision was taken to abandon play.
