The fast bowler annihilated the Proteas in Johannesburg on Saturday, taking 6-17 from 12.1 overs of unplayable bowling which included a remarkable spell of 5-1 off 31 deliveries.

Broad accounted for Dean Elgar, Stiaan van Zyl, AB de Villiers, Hashim Amla and Temba Bavuma as the Proteas tumbled to 35-5 before taking the final wicket of Faf du Plessis as the hosts made just 83, with England comfortably reaching their target of 74 to take a 2-0 lead in the series.

The 29-year-old was third in the ranking ahead of the third Test, but his sublime displays - including 2-82 during South Africa's first innings - have seen him displace India's Ravichandran Ashwin at the top of the leaderboard.

The Proteas' Dale Steyn, who missed the encounter at the Wanderers with a shoulder injury, was also overtaken by the Englishman.

Broad is the first England bowler to top the rankings since Steve Harmison, who enjoyed a 120-day stay after reaching the summit in 2004, while Ian Botham also achieved the number-one ranking in 1980.

Ben Stokes has risen 10 places to 33rd in the bowlers' rankings, while Joe Root reclaimed second position in the batsmen's table following his 110 in the third Test.
