Who are the worst players of the tournament so far?

Here’s how we judged the most disappointing players of the competition so far…

You’ve already seen our best XI of the Euro 2016 group stages, but who’s been a big disappointment at this summer’s tournament?

No, this isn’t just a full England line up, though sadly there are three of Roy Hodgson’s men in the team after a very unconvincing start.

Most of these, in fairness, still have time to turn things around, though others have let their nations down with poor performances leading to early exits.

Defence

After his blunder against Wales, there’s no escaping Joe Hart’s inclusion in this team. The England goalkeeper seemed a little over-excited before match and it showed in his performance, even if England ultimately ended up scraping a late win.

Elsewhere at the back, David Alaba could not inspire Austria to a better showing at these Euros as his side head home early. At right-back, we’d hoped to see more from Italy’s Alessandro Florenzi, who has looked superb for AS Roma, but less so despite an attacking wing-back role for Antonio Conte’s side.

Finally, Ashley Williams won’t be too bothered by some shakey moments after helping Wales win the group, but he had a bit of a mare in the defeat to England and could struggle against top class opposition as the tournament goes on. Jan Vertonghen has also not been at his commanding best as unconvincing Belgium go through.

Midfield

In a standard four-man midfield, it’s unfortunate that we’ve not seen more from Portugal’s William Carvalho or Turkey’s Arda Turan, who are both among the finest midfielders in Europe on their day.

Carvalho in particular is constantly being linked with Premier League clubs, but on this evidence it’s perhaps increasingly clear why no one has taken a gamble on him yet.

Out wide, it’s hard to believe how far the stocks of both Raheem Sterling and Mario Gotze have fallen.

Both have long been regarded as among the finest young players in the world, but have done next to nothing for their countries at the Euros so far.

Sterling has been so bad that fans even set up Crowdfunder to get him sent home from France!

Attack

Two players who would have been considered as among the main contenders for the Golden Boot, Harry Kane and Robert Lewandowski have remarkably failed to muster a single goal between them so far.

Things got so bad for Kane that he was dragged off at half time in England’s match against Wales, which looked the right decision as Daniel Sturridge and Jamie Vardy came on to save the day.

Lewandowski, meanwhile, will be happy to have got Poland through a tough group, but he’s been shown up by some of his less glamorous Poland team-mates so far and must improve.
