Ferrer, who claimed glory in Bastad in 2007 and 2012, went down 7-5 6-4 to countryman Albert Ramos-Vinolas on Saturday.

Ramos-Vinolas had never beaten Ferrer in their six previous meetings, but capitalised on some weak second serves from his more illustrious rival - who was also guilty of 10 double faults - to prevail.

Having lost his only previous ATP World Tour final to Pablo Andujar in Casablanca four years ago, Ramos-Vinolas will now face the experienced Fernando Verdasco.

Gastao Elias of Portugal was swept aside by the former world number seven, who triumphed 6-3 6-1 in an hour and five minutes.

Over in the United States, second seed Ivo Karlovic and Gilles Muller will contest the Hall of Fame Championships final.

Karlovic edged fourth seed Marcos Baghdatis 7-6 (7-3) 7-6 (8-6) in Saturday's semi-final in Newport.

Muller, the third seed, was also triumphant in straight sets after he saw off local hope Donald Young 6-3 6-4.
