Finland beat Hungary at Ice Hockey Worlds

Finland overcame early frustration to defeat Hungary 3-0 and move top of Group B at the IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship on Wednesday.

The Finns had 51 shots at goal in a one-sided contest, but for 36 minutes the plucky Hungarians held out at Yubileyny Sports Palace.

However, the deadlock was finally broken when Atte Ohtamaa fizzed a shot under Adam Vay's glove, and Mikko Koivu added a second in a two-on-one situation in the third.

Aleksander Barkov then completed a fine move after receiving a fine backhanded pass from Patrik Laine.

"I thought we had a pretty good game," Barkov said. "We had a lot of chances, but they defended well and had a good goalie. He saved a lot more from going in."

Also in Group B, there was a shock on the cards as Belarus scored four third-period goals to upset Slovakia 4-2 and earn a first win of the tournament.

Trailing 2-0 by the end of the second, Belarus turned on the style to upset the odds with Kirill Gotovets halving the deficit.

An injury to Michal Sersen, which saw him taken away on a stretcher, further dented Slovakia and Belarus took advantage as Artur Gavrus, Andrei Stepanov and Charles Linglet completed the turnaround.

In Group A, Gustav Nyquist hit a hat-trick in Sweden's heavy 7-3 beating of Kazakhstan.

And Switzerland recovered from blowing leads of 3-0 and 4-3 to defeat Latvia 5-4 in a thrilling contest, Eric Blum scoring the crucial goal at 18:31 in the third.
