The Calgary Flames have missed the NHL play-offs in six of the past seven seasons and Glen Gulutzan will be the latest to attempt to get the franchise back on track.

Gulutzan was named as the Flames' new coach on Friday, ending a six-week search that followed the dismissal of Bob Hartley last month.

The 44-year-old had most recently been an assistant for the Vancouver Canucks but previously spent two seasons as the Dallas Stars' head coach, going 64-57-9, missing the play-offs both years.

He had eight seasons of head coaching experience at lower levels before taking over in Dallas for the 2011-12 season.

The Flames missed out on the post-season this year after breaking a five-season play-off drought in 2014-15.

Calgary have won only one play-off series since falling to the Tampa Bay Lightning in seven games in the 2003-04 Stanley Cup Finals.
