"May the sun shine upon you" - Adama Barrow tells Akufo-Addo

Mr Akufo-Addo was sworn-in as president on Saturday, January 7, 2016 by the Chief Justice Mrs Georgina Theodora Wood. The oath of office and allegiance also administered to his vice president Dr Mahamadu Bawumia.

Gambias president-elect Adama Barrow has wished President Nana Akufo-Addo well as the new leader of Ghana.

Mr Akufo-Addo was sworn-in as president on Saturday, January 7, 2017 by the Chief Justice Mrs Georgina Theodora Wood. The oath of office and allegiance also administered to his vice president Dr Mahamadu Bawumia.

Mr Barrow, who won Gambia's election against Yahya Jammeh, in a congratulatory message expressed hope that Akufo-Addo will continue with "the great works" of President John Mahama.

He also commended President Mahama for his maturity and statesmanship and thanked him for his efforts in improving relations between Banjul and Accra.

Mr Barrow pulled off a stunning victory in Gambia, winning 54.54 percent (263,515 votes) while Jammeh took 36.66 percent (212,099) and third party candidate Mama Kandeh 102,969 votes (17.80 percent).

Jammeh conceded defeat and later changed his mind, citing irregularities. He has also petitioned Gambia's court to overturn the results.

Barrow said on Monday that he would take power on Jan. 19 as mandated by the constitution, in spite of Jammeh’s court challenge.
