Ghana Premier League referee, Samuel Sukah, is baffled by the criticisms that have come his way, insisting the penalty he awarded to Hearts of Oak was “the right decision”.

Hearts of Oak inflicted a first defeat of the season on rivals Asante Kotoko thanks to a late penalty converted by Vincent Atinga.

However, the aftermath of the game was dominated by controversy as some Kotoko fans felt the penalty was not genuine.

Referee Samuel Sukah – who officiated the match – has subsequently come under the spotlight, with his penalty call having become a matter of public debate.

However, the referee insists the ball “struck the arm” of Kotoko defender Ahmed Adams, prompting him to point to the spot.

He told Peace FM: “What is a dubious penalty? I don’t understand why they call the penalty a dubious one, it was a right decision I took.

“I was standing few meters away from the scene, why would I cheat any of the two sides especially when I know what it entails when it comes to games between the two teams.

“The defender threw his body and the ball struck his arm. I am a Christian and in my religion, forbid cheating therefore I wouldn’t do that, so that decision I took was the right decision.”
