Ashanti region journalists to boycott election coverage

Journalists in the Ashanti Region are likely to boycott coverage of the 2016 elections if the Electoral Commission does not rescind its decision of charging journalist monies for accreditation.

With just seven months to the November polls journalist in the Ashanti Region are at loggerheads with the Electoral Commission over accreditation.

Reporters were charged Ghc 8 for accreditation during the 2015 district level elections only to be given tags meant for election observers.
But the Deputy Ashanti Regional Director of the Electoral Commission, Lawrence Sarpong has justified his outfit’s stance.

According to him,”accreditation cards are paid for, because the commission spend money to print it and so long as there is a cost to it the commission would have to pass the cost to the beneficiaries of the cards”, he said.
