Goromaru set for imminent Reds debut

Japanese full-back Ayumu Goromaru could be set to make his Queensland Reds debut in the club's pre-season fixture against ACT Brumbies on Friday.

Goromaru signed for the Reds last November but only arrived in Brisbane on Saturday ahead of the 2016 Super Rugby season.

Pending a successful first training session with his Reds team-mates, Goromaru could face the Brumbies in their trial game at Ballymore Stadium.

"We understand there's an integration process we need to go through, to get him involved in training and understanding the way we want to play," Reds coach Richard Graham said.

"In terms of Friday we will most likely make a decision tomorrow [after training]."

Graham said the signing of Goromaru will be a massive boost for the side's kicking strength.

"It was known we didn't kick well last season as a side," he said. "A lot of the games we have lost recently have been by small margins. Having a guy that can kick goals is important."

Goromaru was the star man in Japan's historic victory over South Africa at the 2015 Rugby World Cup, which is widely regarded as one of the biggest upsets in rugby union history.

The 29-year-old scored a stunning 24 points in the win, and said Japan's performance at the tournament grabbed the attention of the general public.

"There were people in Japan who were not fans beforehand but after seeing what we achieved at the World Cup they have come on board," he said.

The full-back, who signed from Japanese outfit Yamaha Jubilo, said he is excited to test himself in Super Rugby.

"It's my first time playing Super Rugby so feeling that strength from the Reds side is what I am looking forward to most," Goromaru said.

"I was impressed by the speed and physicality of the teams that play Super Rugby and I am looking forward to experiencing that myself."

The new Super 18 season begins on February 26, with the Reds' first fixture away to the New South Wales Waratahs the following day.
