Sir Michael Snyder, Leader of London Freemasons, said: “This donation is made on behalf of all London Freemasons.

“The Metropolitan Masonic Charity regularly supports many local charities and community initiatives across London and we wish to assist those who have lost their homes as well as all of their possessions.”

The government has since indicated that the survivors of the fire will be rehomed in a luxury development in the heart of Kensington.

Sixty-eight one, two and three-bedroom flats have been acquired at the Kensington Row development.

The apartments are "newly built social housing" in a complex where the price of private homes starts at £1.5m, the government said.
