Grubauer saves Capitals, Eriksson lifts Bruins
The Washington Capitals' 3-1 win against the Los Angeles Kings might have been a lot nervier had goaltender Philipp Grubauer not made a season-high 39 saves.
Los Angeles took the lead in the first period through Anze Kopitar but Andre Burakovsky levelled the scores with seconds remaining in the second.
Grubauer was immense in goals as he denied the Kings time and time again, while Evgeny Kuznetsov and Jason Chimera combined well at the other end to score the third-period goals which sealed the win for the Capitals.
The Boston Bruins defeated the Columbus Blue Jackets 2-1.
Boston had to rely on Loui Eriksson to come up with the goods in his 700th NHL game as he scored 33 seconds into overtime.
The goal was Eriksson's 20th of the season and added to Patrice Bergeron's first-period equaliser after Alexander Wennberg had put the Blue Jackets ahead.
Elsewhere, the San Jose Sharks won a 4-2 thriller against the Tampa Bay Lightning.
The Lightning took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission but the Sharks were on top thereafter, even if they could only make their dominance count on the scoreboard in the third period thanks to Matt Nieto and Melker Karlsson.
The Carolina Hurricanes beat the Winnipeg Jets 2-1, while the Philadelphia Flyers were too good for the New Jersey Devils 6-3.
The Ottawa Senators prevailed 2-1 after a shoot-out against the Buffalo Sabres, the St Louis Blues accounted for the Dallas Stars 2-1 and the Anaheim Ducks pipped the Edmonton Oilers 5-3.
