Hurricanes register first Big Bash League win

Dan Christian played a starring role for Hobart Hurricanes as they claimed their first win of the 2015-16 Big Bash League against Brisbane Heat.

The all-rounder took two wickets and four catches as the Heat fell 20 runs short of the Hurricanes' 184-3, Christian's heroics in the field coming after Tim Paine's fluent 87 at the top of the order for Hobart.

Having won the toss, captain Paine took full advantage with a blistering innings that saw him race to 50 in just 34 balls, with six fours and four huge sixes helping him to an unbeaten 87.

The 31-year-old was particularly devastating on the leg side, sending Josh Lalor (0-32) and Andrew Fekete (1-32) out of the ground early on before adding Ben Cutting (1-32) to his list of victims with a final maximum in the last over.

Around his impressive display Kumar Sangakkara (43) and George Bailey (40) made telling contributions, both men finding the caps with precision as they got into the 40s before getting out.

Brisbane's reply started well as Jimmy Peirson (29) and Lendl Simmons (16) put on 36 for the opening partnership inside four overs, however they lost wickets in quick succession to collapse to 76-4 by the halfway point.

The Christian show began the slump as he clung onto his first catch at cover, before forcing Simmons into an edge behind to Paine.

Jason Floros (42) and Nathan Reardon (41) gave the Heat hope, but after another Christian (2-22) wicket he held onto another three catches to keep the Hurricanes on track.

Fittingly the 32-year-old was involved in the final dismissal as he caught James Hopes (13) at long-on off the final delivery, the Heat finishing 164-8 as they slipped to a second successive defeat.
