The reasons for President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo failing to appear in the 60th anniversary cloth during the independence parade has been revealed.

Spokesperson for the Ghana@60 planning committee, Mr Jefferson Sackey explained that the President first wore the anniversary cloth when he attended the premiering of the Independence struggle documentary and therefore his decision to wear the smock was not deliberate.

Many Ghanaians had expected the president to be adorned in the new cloth but to their disappointment, it was never the case – a development which has raised questions over how committed the president is to promoting Ghana.

Jefferson Sackey said "President Akufo-Addo’s decision not to wear the Ghana@60 cloth was not deliberate. The anniversary is a year-long celebration and not a one day event and I know that subsequently, our President would definitely be in the Ghana@60 cloth for all to see."

He said "Even when former President Nkrumah was declaring Ghana as an independent country, he wore a traditional smock just to show how Ghanaian he was."

Earlier, Deputy Chief of Staff Abu Jinapor said President Akufo-Addo's decision not to wear the cloth was not deliberate.

He said the choice of the smock was to represent Northern Ghana where the attire is an iconic cultural feature.
