India's Kohli and Ashwin pummel West Indies

Virat Kohli made a sublime maiden Test double century and Ravichandran Ashwin scored a century as India made their second-highest total against West Indies in Antigua on Friday.

Kohli has been prolific this year and the India captain was rewarded for another masterclass by making exactly 200 before declaring on 566-8 on day two of the first Test at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium.

All-rounder Ashwin (113) took advantage of being dropped by new Windies wicketkeeper Shane Dowrich on 43 by going on to bring up his third Test century at North Sound.

Mohammed Shami (1-6) dismissed Rajendra Chandrika as West Indies closed on 31-1, trailing by a mammoth 535 runs, on a day which belonged to the classy Kohli, who became the first Indian to score a double century outside Asia in a decade.

The tourists resumed on 302-4 in front of another small crowd and wasted no time inflicting more punishment on the Windies attack, with Kohli bringing up his 150 by pulling Jason Holder, who took the new ball, for four in the third over of the day.

Ashwin ought to have been on his way when he edged paceman Shannon Gabriel (2-65) behind, but Dowrich put down a simple chance.

Kohli passed his previous Test-best of 169 as he continued to pummel the Windies, using his feet brilliantly and caressing some delicious drives in a high-quality exhibition of batting.

Spinner Ashwin brought up his half-century by slapping Carlos Brathwaite wide of point to the boundary and Kohli planted a kiss on the pitch after bringing up his double century with a single off debutant Roston Chase in the final over before lunch.

Kohli's marathon innings was finally ended when he played on to a delivery from Gabriel just after the interval, ending a majestic 283-ball knock which included 24 boundaries.

Ashwin, who put on 168 with Kohli for the fifth wicket, continued to make Dowrich pay for a costly spill and was celebrating reaching three figures after whipping Devendra Bishoo (3-163) to the boundary.

Wicketkeeper-batsman Wriddhiman Saha (40) chipped in and Amit Mishra (53) added insult to injury with a brisk half-century, with all three batsmen dismissed by Kraigg Brathwaite (3-65) before Kohli declared.

The Windies looked set to make it through to the close unscathed before Chandrika (16) edged the recalled Shami behind, but nightwatchman Bishoo and Brathwaite ensured no further damage was done.
